Print them over a grid of 1cm squares in contrasting colors. Want some high-visibility ones? Use fluorescent-yellow card-stock, or just print a layer of yellow or orange on your paper first. There's no end to the ways you can make these as usable and functional as you want. Or check your printing options to invert it so it's white on black. Print up some paper ones and transparency ones, then tape or glue one of each together, you'll have a rule for any lighting/contrast situation. And probably just as, if not more, accurate than any ruler you'd buy in any office-supply store. I'd say that's as accurate as anyone would need when measuring insects. When I compared these rulers against a metal machinist's rule (ruled to 0.1 mm), the printed ones were off by no more than about 0.2mm after 10 cm (maybe even less than that). You could probably make 10x's as many for the price that you'd pay for just one at any store. If you're concerned about water ruining the print legibility then just spray them with some art-fixative acrylic spray, or run them through a laminator. The transparency ones work particularly well when I'm shooting a bug through a window - it sticks to the glass and I can just slap it up next to the bug and shoot the photo. 4 pages of them when cut apart is enough to last for ages. I printed up some of the batch CM rulers on high quality glossy, matt, and card-stock papers, as well as transparency overlay material.

You can download printable paper ruler templates from: "Some printable paper rulers" I posted this link in another thread concerning measuring things, but others must not have seen it. Just do us a favor? Please please please please pretty please stick with metric! Hope that helps!Įstimating the size of critters becomes much easier as well, with the practice of looking at the scale and the bug and the scale and the bug. That way the two prints do not get separated, and I can delete the photos of the scale. I then save that (cropped) picture with the length in mm appended to the file name. When I get them home, it's a simple matter to measure every bug that has a picture of the scale after it. Then, without changing the zoom, I take a picture of my scale. When I happen upon a bug I wish to shoot for pics or simply to measure for my records, I take a good full-on horizontal shot. With my new camera, my zooms are all over the map, so I carry a scale with me at all times. Of course, you have to know the image you're measuring is shot at the same zoom, and the insect is in focus, for the measurement to be correct.

When I process my photos, I use Thumbsplus software to open copies of both the insect I want to measure and the photo of the scale I crop the insect so I can get the image of the scale next to it. With my old camera, I was almost always at maximum zoom, so it was just a simple matter of taking a picture of a scale (in focus) at that zoom. Sit back and enjoy your streamlined computing experience.I thought I might share a little trick I devised recently for measuring the size of insects without trying to stick a scale next to them.

How to Disable Thumbnails CompletelyĪlternately, if you find that Windows 10 thumbnails never work properly or have become a nuisance, you can turn them off completely. If they match, then you’ve found your problem. Open the file in the associated program and see if it actually matches the apparently faulty thumbnail Windows created. If not, there may be a problem with the file itself. Hopefully, the thumbnails have been recreated and are now correct. Now, open File Explorer or look at the Desktop to see if this has fixed your problem.
